Dr. Allison L. Stelling is a vibrational spectroscopist who develops methods to measure the solution state structures of biomolecular systems and their energetic environments. She completed a BA in chemistry at Reed College in 2004, and a PhD in chemistry at Stony Brook in 2008 under Prof. Tonge. After competing postdoctoral training in Germany under Prof. Reiner Salzer applying Raman and IR microscopy to diagnose highly malignant soft tissue cancers, she was awarded an NIH Kirschstein postdoctoral fellowship under Prof. Hashim Al-Hashimi at Duke's Biochemistry department developing IR-based methods to determine DNA structures in liquid water. She started her position at UT Dallas in August 2020. Her group uses variable temperature infrared spectroscopy to determine local stability of nucleobase containing structures, and develops infrared and Raman methods to measure molecular conformation and noncovalent environment of a common cellular substrate, s-adenosyl-l-methionine, when it is bound to enzymatic active sites.
